Hybrid Cars: The Basics 

Hybrids get their generic name from their split power source. These vehicles have an internal combustion engine along with an electric car motor(s). Hybrid cars have two batteries, a high-voltage battery that powers the electric motor and a traditional lead-acid battery that powers everything the battery in a gas-only car powers, such as the lights, infotainment system, and power windows. Hybrid vehicles rely on regenerative braking and the gas engine to keep its high-voltage battery charged.

You can charge your Subaru PHEV by plugging in at home or at a public charging station. The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is a PHEV. PHEVs are a bridge between conventional hybrid cars and EVs. That's because they can handle some local driving using electric power alone before the gas engine kicks in to supply power during longer adventures.

The mechanics in an electric vehicle are significantly simpler than a hybrid. EVs use a large battery to power their electric motor(s). Since they don't consume fuel at all, EVs like the Subaru Solterra don't contain gasoline engines, gas tanks, or exhaust systems. This also means that EVs do not release emissions.

The simplicity of EVs leads to huge carbon efficiency gains. Like PHEVs, EVs rely on regenerative braking and an external power source to keep their batteries charged. Even though EVs require charging, they're still about 400 percent more efficient than gas-only automobiles.
