The Subaru Outback roof rack weight limit is an important specification to understand when transporting bicycles, kayaks, camping equipment, or other outdoor gear. The 2027 Subaru Outback features raised roof rails designed to accommodate different cargo accessories, with separate weight limits for driving and parking. At Gillman Subaru San Antonio, you can learn how to make the most of the Subaru Outback roof storage capabilities.
Subaru Outback Roof Rack Weight Capacity
The current Subaru Outback roof rail system supports up to 220 lbs of dynamic weight and 800 lbs of static weight. These ratings are based on Subaru's published specifications for the redesigned 2026 Subaru Outback. The exact limits for the 2027 Subaru Outback should be confirmed in its owner's manual.
The two ratings apply under different circumstances:
- Dynamic Weight Capacity: 220 lbs. This is the maximum roof load while the vehicle is moving, including the weight of compatible crossbars, cargo carriers, and equipment.
- Static Weight Capacity: 800 lbs. This is the maximum supported load when the vehicle is parked on level ground with an appropriate roof rack setup.
Understanding these differences is especially important when choosing equipment that will remain attached to the roof during travel.
What Can You Carry on the Subaru Outback Roof Rack?
The Subaru Outback provides several options for transporting equipment outside the cabin. Compatible roof accessories can accommodate:
- Kayaks and canoes
- Bicycles and bike carriers
- Skis and snowboards
- Rooftop cargo boxes
- Camping equipment and rooftop tents
The available weight capacity depends on the equipment being installed. For example, a cargo box weighing 40 lbs would leave up to 180 lbs for additional cargo under a 220-lb dynamic limit, provided the crossbars and mounting hardware are rated for that combined load.
