Ever since its introduction to the Subaru lineup last model year, the Subaru Ascent has made waves among outdoors enthusiasts near San Antonio, TX. Thanks to its off-road proficiency, impressive technology, and large cabin, it’s an excellent SUV for commuting, adventuring, and taking your kids around town. Savvy drivers will likely want to compare it to other SUVs such as the Toyota Highlander. Here is a side by side comparison between the two.

Style and Cabin

The 2021 Subaru Ascent places a large emphasis on providing a comfortable and luxurious ride for passengers and drivers. The pleasing, earthy design has three different colors of leather and wood trim, giving it a premium look.

In addition to being attractive, the cabin is also functional. Up front, you’ll find clear, easy to read display screens, storage cubbies built into the dash, and USB outlets and HVAC vents built into the third row.

While the Toyota Highlander is also a three-row SUV, both its interior and exterior are not quite as premium as the one found on the new Subaru SUV. We’ll leave it for the reviewers at “Car and Driver” to say, “The Highlander has a basic, unimpressive exterior that emphasizes utility over style.” It’s also not quite as roomy on the interior, with 144.9 cubic feet of passenger volume, compared to 153.5 cubic feet on the Subaru Ascent.

Performance

Because the 2021 Subaru Ascent is a Subaru SUV, it is focused on all-road performance. It boasts a standard Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive plus 8.7 inches of ground clearance to deliver excellent performance on all surfaces. Meanwhile, the AWD system also delivers an impressive 27 miles per gallon on the highway.

In comparison, while the Toyota Highlander has an available V6 engine, no all-wheel-drive is available. Also, the fuel economy of 24 miles per gallon on the highway falls short.
